Vitamin C has become an indispensable part of the world of cosmetics. And rightly so! This all-rounder is responsible for many great results in the field of skin improvement. But why is it such a powerful ingredient? And why does our skin do so well? Read more in this blog!
Just a bit of science;
Vitamin C is originally found in all kinds of fruits and vegetables. However, you cannot squeeze and extract the vitamin C and then put it in the jar of cream, unfortunately.
The form of pure vitamin C is also called ascorbates, a form of salt that embodies vitamin C. They can therefore be processed as a cosmetic vitamin C. You can find this in the ingredients list under various names:
- Ascorbic acid (the most famous)
- Ascorbyl palmitate (a super stable form of vitamin c and oil soluble)
- Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (the most potent and active form of vitamin C, and has the ability to penetrate the skin barrier and carry other ingredients with it)
- Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (form of ascorbic acid)
The reason that vitamin C is processed in this form is that it has the most stable form. Vitamin C is a very volatile active ingredient, and by the time the jar or bottle is opened it has largely evaporated due to contact with oxygen. The vitamin C ascorbates are more stable and less sensitive to external influences. This form can now have the effect that will actually improve the skin. It is less irritating to the skin and the results are much more effective.
Why should you use vitamin C?
Vitamin C falls under the group of antioxidants. Free radicals form in the skin due to external influences, extrinsic causes. Free radicals in the skin are caused by: UV radiation and blue light (HEV), exhaust fumes, stress and an unhealthy lifestyle. This triggers processes in the skin that cause pigmentation, reduced cell activity, collagen breakdown and dry skin.
Yes, but what does it do? The antioxidant (vitamin C) is the counterpart of free radicals and neutralizes their destructive effect, which slows down skin aging due to external influences. This is just one effect, but an important one, of vitamin C in your skincare.
It also provides: hydration of dehydrated skin, brightening of dull skin, refinement of the skin structure, reduction of rosacea... and so much more. That is why the beloved vitamin C is a real all-rounder and indispensable in everyone's skincare routine.
