Wat is pigmentatie en hoe ontstaat het? - Skin / Scent

What is pigmentation and how does it arise?

In the salon we often receive people who suffer from hyperpigmentation, so we thought it was a great opportunity to take a closer look at the pigmentation problem. Do you also suffer from pigmentation? Then Image Skincare's extensive ILUMA line might be something for you. This line helps in the process of combating hyperpigmentation. But what is pigmentation and how does it arise? Read it below!

Besides the fact that we love our beautiful tan in the summer, it has a very important function for the skin: protection. The pigment cell is triggered by UV radiation, especially UV-A.

To understand pigment (disorders) we must first delve into the skin to understand this process.

The pigment cell (Melanocyte) provides the skin cell (keratinocyte) with a package of colored protection granules (melanosomes). This process called: Melanogenesis has one specific purpose, namely: protecting the cell nucleus of the keratinocyte. This is where the important processes related to cell renewal and repair take place. Is this not going well? Then the signs of aging quickly become visible.

Nice, huh? Such a guardian angel in your skin? Unfortunately, the guardian angel, the melanocyte, is also sensitive to triggers. A runaway melanocyte, which manifests itself in cosmetic disturbances: hyper-pigmentation, hypo-pigmentation, pigment spots and so on..

What then triggers the melanocyte (pigment cell)?

Traumas:

  • recovery from acne also called Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • cosmetic treatments that have gone TOO deep: think of microdermabrasion or chemical peels
  • inflammatory processes such as: psoriasis or eczema

But hormones also have a major influence on the formation of hyperpigmentation, such as:

  • pregnancy where 1 in 2 women experience hyperpigmentation and where 10-15% of women are left with permanent damage, called Melasma
  • birth control medication, often found on the cheekbones

Medication also has a major influence, such as: painkillers (NSAIDs), antibiotics, and topical cortisone.

Pigmentation disorders that are visible on the epidermis may have been deeper in the skin for months. To tackle pigmentation, it is important to know that it is broken down into layers. This is possible through treatments, products and the right protection.

At Skin / Scent we have various treatments to tackle pigmentation, namely:

  • peels from Image skincare > tailor-made peels with skin-lightening ingredients, including lactic acid, which has a proven positive effect on hyperpigmentation.
  • removal by means of the laser
  • Remove using the plasma pen

With the right home care, much can be done to tackle hyperpigmentation. The golden rule is: day care with a high SPF, exfoliate to brighten or remove superficial pigment, and use stimulating anti-aging care.

Do you have this specific problem? And do you want to do something about it? We are happy to help you in a no-obligation intake interview to discuss the options and draw up a personal treatment plan with you.
