It is becoming increasingly popular, it can be found in more and more fragrances and many people love it. But what exactly is Aoud, Oudh or Oud? I'll explain it to you in this blog!

What is the Aoud, Oudh, Oud?

The raw material is written in many different ways and actually most variations are correct. The most commonly used Arabic name is Oudh, also pronounced 'oodh'. In Dutch, Oudh is also known as Agarhout.

The ingredient Oudh is extracted from the tropical tree Agar Aquilaria. The trees are mainly found in Southeast Asia. To obtain the raw material Oudh, the tree must first be infected with a specific species of fungus. When trees are infected with the fungus 'Phialophora parasitica', a natural reaction occurs. Because the tree wants to protect the damaged parts against the fungus, oil is released that hardens and discolors to a dark color. The dark, strongly scented substance that is released is the Oud.

Why is Oudh so precious?

The Agar Aquilaria trees are very rare. Besides the fact that the trees are very rare, only 20% of the trees ultimately emit Oudh which smells. For the best Oud, you have to wait an average of 30 years for the tree to mature. Combined with the rarity, the expensive process of making Oudh and the increasing demand for Oudh, we can conclude why Oudh is one of the most expensive raw materials in the perfume industry.

What does Oud smell like?

Everyone experiences a scent differently and a scent smells differently on everyone's skin. There is also a difference in where someone originally comes from. In the Middle East they associate the scent of Oudh as well-known, festive and the scent is characteristic for protection. In the West they link scent to seduction and perhaps to alienation. The scent Oudh can be described as smoky, woody, aromatic and perhaps slightly dusty. The Oudh scent is complex, which makes it very mysterious at the same time.

It remains difficult to explain a smell through a screen. So come visit us in the store where you can admire the different Oudh scents. Below are our most bestsellers containing the raw material Oudh.
